Album for the exhibition, which took place as part of the Krakow Photomonth 2009 festival at the Bunkier Sztuki Contemporary Art Gallery, curated by Maria Anna Potocka and Stefan Okołowicz.

Witkacy exhibition. Psychoholism was prepared on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the death of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. The gallery presents over one hundred portraits and self-portraits from 1910-1938, selected for psychological expressiveness. Witkacy carefully analyzed all manifestations of human expression, registering them with a camera. He called himself a “psychological portraitist.”

Witkacy’s self-portraits juxtaposed with the portraits expose an interesting contradiction. The portraits are mysterious, silent, extremely restrained, discreet. On the other hand, self-portraits – often auto-performances in front of the lens – shock with exhibitionism and demonism. As part of the self-portraits, staged group shots will also be presented. The faces and poses, role-playing, and disguise interested Witkacy in the context of dynamic and sudden psychophysical transformations that can be captured thanks to photography.

A publication containing reproductions of photographs and a collection of artistic, psychological and psychiatric texts (in English), incl. literary theorist (Michał Paweł Markowski), psychiatrist (Bogusław Habrat), psychologist (Edward Nęcka), art theorist (Maria Anna Potocka).
